In past it has been somewhat difficult to track the value of social networking platform, Twitter.

Enter the soon-to-be-launched new analytics service, allowing Twitter users to monitor the popularity of tweets, their own popularity on the platform and the number of retweets, replies and faves each tweet receives.

Ultimately, Twitter has recognised the real need for identifying tangible results by launching this powerful tool that will not only ease a marketers life, it will make them water at the mouth with reports saying it will be initially free.

It’s big business tracking social media, and this news is perhaps ringing alarm bells amongst some. Social media moitoring services can rake it in as companies are keen to understand their online pr by what their customers say about them on these platforms and perhaps, through this can influence those conversations. So its little wonder their nerves will be intensifying at this prospect.

There’s no doubt that this *free* tool will not remain so for too long. Twitter is acutely aware of the rewards that can be reaped and the potential customer base they have at their fingertips, with a following of 175 million users. Some may say they are throwing millions away by doing so but I’m sure the social media giant has plenty of tricks up its sleeve.

Let’s just watch this space.

STAR Management is an International Celebrity Brokerage, sourcing Bands, DJ’s, Hosts/MC’s, Speakers and Celebrities for a wide variety of corporate and private events, advertising and marketing campaigns and personal appearances.

There’s no accounting for taste and nor should there be, the client can choose whoever they like and as long as they’ve got the budget, we’ll book’em! Love them or loathe them reality TV shows like ‘Big Brother’, ‘Xfactor’, and ‘I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here’ have given us the ability to utilise a more diverse range of personalities who are only in the public eye for the short term….granted sometimes that is for the best.

What inspires you?

Success! Getting the job done… most of our clients don’t know who they want to book when they pick up the phone, and this is where the real work begins. When the job’s done and it’s a huge success, it’s incredibly rewarding to watch the client beam from ear to ear…and take all the credit. Every job is different and every client is different, some jobs take a year to come to fruition, others you can pull off in 48hrs.

In your opinion what are the biggest issues that digital could be used to address?

For STAR Management digital media is a multi platform, marketing gift horse…these tools enable us to reach clients we’d never have got within earshot of, who are now on our desktop and conversing in social banter…lovely!

Who/ What is the next big thing?

www.skelptarse.com a platform for the common man to have a voice! Customer service can be way down the pecking order in this country but that doesn’t mean we have to let those faceless, feckless corporate giants get away with it when they don’t treat us with the respect we deserve. Its genius, and best of all, very liberating!

The best advice I was ever given ….

Have courage and dare to win! Raising your head above the parapet might mean you get shot at occasionally, but there are also huge rewards…normally of the financial kind.

In 5 years time …….

Sunning myself outside my beach ‘hut’ somewhere in the Caribbean…I am getting on a bit you know….

Sean & Joanne, who run Taste, the sandwich shop across from our office have earned themselves a reputation around here. Everyone is talking about them. If you’ve grown up in Scotland and spent your life trying to avoid “getting a reputation” you might think that statement is a negative. Think again.

Taste serve great food but where they stand out from the crowd is in the friendly customer service they offer. They greet me by name, they remember that I like a soft roll instead of a crunchy one and they actually listen when they enquire about my day. Their sandwich shop is always busy because they have the whole package, great food, reasonable prices and most importantly they care about their customers and in doing so are earning a good reputation. They don’t have a website or promote their business in a digital way, word of mouth is their most powerful tool and it’s working because they remember to focus on the customer.

Transfer this scenario to your own business. Who is managing your reputation? Do you have a digital public relations strategy? How can you engage with a large audience and generate business? The world of PR has been changing over the last few years to embrace the powerful effect of social networking and step forward from traditional broadcast and media. The volume has been turned to high on word of mouth as consumers can quickly research your brand with the help of google, social networks, forums as well as traditional press. Are people talking about you? Are they saying positive things? Worse still, are they saying nothing?

Silence may be golden but when it comes to generating business, driving traffic, promoting a brand and building an excellent reputation, focusing on the consumer should be your priority. The rest, we can look after for you.

Illegal Jack’s South West Grill is a contemporary tex-mex hangout. We’re a new business trying to make our way in the world by taking the chains head-on. The only way we’ll succeed is by trying harder than the competition, and after a tough opening six months we’re finally getting established. All the food here is prepared fresh daily, and our customers tell us they can really taste the difference.

What inspires you?

People inspire me. Two friends in particular spring immediately to mind, because they both strive to be better and won’t accept the status quo. One is Andrew Lemoncello, a Scottish runner with good physical talent, but supreme mental strength. He’s now an Olympian and finished 8th in the London Marathon this year. Lemon chased his running dream by moving to the US for university and now runs with a professional team in Arizona.

The other is Dr Steven Miller, one of Scotland’s top young medics. A more talented physician and researcher is hard to imagine: yet, he’s had enough of Scotland and the UK in general and is moving with his family to start a new life in New Zealand. What both Steve and Lemon do is incredible: I really look up to them.

In your opinion what are the biggest issues that digital could be used to address?

For me digital is about communication. In a relatively short space of time have used Facebook and particularly Twitter to create interest in the Illegal Jack’s brand. As an independent operator my only constraint is time – balancing a full-time academic job along with a new business isn’t easy. But the more you put in to Social Media the more you get of of it. Our blog has a more detailed explanation and indeed serves as a huge vote of thanks for all Social Media has done for me.

Who/ What is the next big thing?

The idea that the Government should stop trying to rule every facet of people’s lives. It’s crazy how much intereference has been created in the last 13 years, and the resultant increase in tax to pay for all of it. Such a system is massively wasteful and does nothing other than to create dependency on the State. Which is of course the previous administration’s raison d’etre. It must end and be reversed. Governments should be there to encourage development and self-responsibility; this has not been the case for quite some time.

The best advice I was ever given ….

“You can’t do that.” Telling me I can’t do something almost always has the opposite effect!

In 5 years time …….

Illegal Jack’s will be a profitable business, and we will have expanded from our current operation on Lothian Road. Have sites and ideas in mind, firstly though we need to steady the company’s financial position, and continue to make people happy when they come here and proud to be associated with us.

www.illegaljacks.co.uk
