According to Computer Weekly, CIOs are in danger of losing their seat at the boardroom table as they concentrate on cutting costs instead of preparing the company for the upturn.

This struck us as being rather odd, so we gave clients SCC – Europe’s largest independent technology group – a quick call to see what they thought. Pointing out that any new IT system worth it’s salt should be both saving you money and delivering greater functionality, their top technology bod says that CIO’s could actually consolidate their position by delivering both outcomes.

“Cutting costs and preparing IT systems for the future are not mutually exclusive. In fact, any smart thinking CIO should already be insisting on both as a prerequisite of any future tech strategy,” said Rhys Sharp, CTO at SCC.

“The recession is placing huge constraints on CIO’s, but there are ways to combat the additional pressures and there are already companies who are experiencing a 50% reduction of their IT costs whilst boosting server productivity. SCC have recently launched a server consolidation service that enables IT directors address the double pressure of improved productivity and reduced costs whilst also enjoying a Return on Investment within 8 months, so it’s not all doom and gloom”
