We’ve organised a ‘Bit of a Do’ to celebrate the 100th Annual International Women’s Day, raising a bit of dough for Oxfam while we’re at it.

The Revolver team has organised a bit of fun and a few drinks at the Brunswick Hotel in Glasgow on Thursday 3rd March. The evening has been kindly sponsored by our friends at Bourne, with music by DJ Konx-om-Pax, visuals by Yuva, and a wee favour or two for the ladies from Booly Mardy’s.

We’re also holding a raffle, with prizes having been generously donated by Whyte and Mackay, the Brunswick Hotel, Tasteee Ltd, great Scottish female creatives Julie Broadfoot, Lindsay Docherty, Angharad McLaren, Joanne Yeadon, and of course, we’ve chucked in a few things for such a good cause – there’ll even be a gorgeous cuddly toy for some lucky person to take home with them. With all proceeds going to Oxfam, anyone who pops along will be treated to a few Kir Royales, Cava and beers on offer to help the evening along.

If you fancy joining us on Thursday evening – if you feel passionately about the Oxfam cause…women…or indeed if the weekend seems just too far away and you fancy having a drink, a chat or even a dance with some friendly folks, there’s still space for a few more.

Just let us know by emailing info@revolver-pr.co.uk, contacting us on our page, or DM us if we’re friends on Twitter.

Why have we organised this event in aid of Oxfam?

Any excuse for a drink? Well yes, but there are other reasons behind this soiree…

Now, I know a lot of men would *humph* and question, ‘Why do we need a bloomin’ Women’s Day? Every day’s bloomin’ women’s day in my house!’. Well that’s as may be in a lot of households in the UK, but really, if you honestly think about it, you would have to agree that there are a lots of pretty amazing women the world over who are struggling on a daily basis for better lives for themselves and their families. Or even cast a thought towards those women simply holding it all together, juggling work, family and home life which may be less newsworthy, but deserved of recognition all the same.

We’re not ones to preach, however it’s definitely worth being reminded that women across the globe in the developing world continue to exist subjected to difficult social and economic circumstances. Poverty, illiteracy and violence remain just some of the inflictions put upon women and the families which they attempt to provide and care for.

The enduring paradigm of women’s existence does not sit well with recent insight into global socio-economic matters. I would go as far as to say that it is a juxtaposition that women live in poverty, fear, injustice and enforced inferior citizenship in some nations of the developing world, while it is these women who can provide the strength and circumstance to advance a developing society.

The United Nations Social and Economic Council offered the following insight in 2010:

“There is increasing recognition that women’s economic empowerment is a key strategy for economic development that not only improves the economic status of women, their households and communities, but also creates a multiplier effect for economic growth. The lack of economic empowerment for women jeopardizes growth and poverty reduction and leads to less favourable development outcomes.”

So there you have it, if women gain economic empowerment society, as a whole, benefits.

This is why we should do all we can to support and celebrate the positive work which women undertake and this is why we’ve organised an informal evening for friends and acquaintances in the Brunswick Hotel in Glasgow.

For those of you who are still skeptical, then just take a moment to think of your mum, your granny, your aunt, your wife, your daughter, your friend, or indeed your favourite woman, whomever she is and for whatever reason she has been put on that pedestal, and join us in raising a glass.

Reigning Miss Scotland and Miss UK, Katherine Brown, a fitness ambassador for the Scottish Government and former Scottish junior tennis player, was out enjoying the ever-changing elements of Glasgow’s climate last week, jumping around with Marco the Monkey and one of the weewalkers’.

Miss Scotland was pledging her support and lending her name to the upcoming Glasgow WeeWalks event in aid of the Wildhearts charity.

The Scottish charity aims to help Glasgow youngsters get fit and healthy this Spring by holding a sponsored walk event in Kelvingrove Park, Glasgow on Sunday May 23rd. The WildHearts’ WeeWalk will see toddlers and primary aged children and families from across the city completing a 1 or 3 mile route around the Garden, tackling a host of fun activities along the way.
The WildHearts’ WeeWalk in Aberdeen last year was a resounding success. 250 kids took part in the fun-filled sponsored walk event and raised £5000 for the charity’s micro-finance projects in Ghana. The £5000 fund was enough to set up an entire Trust Group which provided initial loans and business training for 25-30 Ghanaians to start up their own businesses and work their way out of poverty.
Each loan affects the lives of 7 people initially, and the money is recycled 3 times every year. As a result of this process, the WeeWalk in Aberdeen last year has already made a dramatic difference to up to 630 people in Ghana, and will continue to do so for more and more people every year.

Inbetween photo opps, Katherine expressed her enjoyment of being part of this excellent cause, “I am thrilled to be able to lend my support to a cause such as the WildHearts’ WeeWalk which not only encourages healthy living among children in Scotland, but also empowers women in Ghana to work their way out of poverty and improve theirs and their children’s lives exponentially.”

Utilising the powers of social media, Wildheart’s digital PR team have the footage up on YouTube. Some may say, the perfect opportunity to check out Miss Scotland in her shades.. and her high points to date http://www.youtube.com/revolverpr#p/a/u/0/d_K8eHFpVKU.
